Writing Assignment
The picture I have chosen is entitled the Centennial Tree by Christele, a photographer based in Australia who has posted this on Devian Art. This can be found at http://catchaca1.deviantart.com/art/Centennial-tree-414934008.
This picture hosts a huge variety of significant compositional features. We can see curvilinear lines in the forms of branches, roots, and the overall curvy shape of the tree. We also see Converging Lines in the form of the major branches reaching in towards the trunk of the tree, directly connecting to Diverging lines in the form of roots that are spreading out from the truck of the tree into the ground.
The color composition of this picture is also impeccable. The greenery is well contrasted with the wood, and the soft golden glow on the bottom left of the tree indicates this picture was taken around evening time, or it was the sun peeking in through misty clouds. The lighting here is just right, reflecting well on the compositional features of this photograph, but not overexposing the photograph.
Lastly, I took notice of the depth of field in this photograph. I assume a low F-stop has been used, possibly 4.5 or 5.0. This has resulted in the tree being in perfect focus, ensuring that the background does not interfere or take away the attention from the main subject.
This picture shows us the serenity that lies in untouched or well maintained nature. It makes me reflect on older times (Yes, and I'm only 22) where we as children would sit under trees and read a book, reflect, nap, or have a cold coke after a tough soccer game. But alas, we no longer have time for such simple and "trivial" undertakings anymore. I hope people see this image and invoke in themselves a strong enough desire to go and sit under a tree as I have countless times in my childhood, and reflect on the beauty of God's creations and how much they have to be grateful for.
